New instructions for completing logistics information in 2026
Product information is increasingly processed in machine-readable format and exchanged directly between systems. This requires more accurate logistics and packaging size information, as automated warehouse operations and cost-efficient transportation rely on the accuracy of this data.
The topic has generated extensive discussion, and a need has been identified to revise the way logistics information is reported in the Product Information Standard. The purpose of the revision is to clarify and harmonize data reporting practices and provide more detailed guidance so that logistics information better supports the industry’s information needs.
What will change?
The reporting of package size information will be harmonized in accordance with GS1 guidelines, with the exception of pallet packaging. Going forward, all Package size fields must contain the quantity of deliverable products.
In addition, Package Size 1 will no longer represent the minimum sales quantity. The following new fields will also be introduced:
Minimum sales quantity = the smallest deliverable quantity in trade between the supplier and the wholesaler
Pricing unit = the pricing basis of the sold product in trade between the supplier and the wholesaler
Nominal reel quantity for reel-delivered products = the delivery quantity of a full reel, always reported in meters
Standard delivery reel type = the standard reel type of a cable product, for example K6
The last-mentioned field applies only to cable products in the Sähkönumerot.fi service. The LVI-INFO.fi service does not contain cable products to which this field applies.
In addition, a new option, square meter (NMP), will be added to the Usage unit field.
What will be affected by the change?
The change requires existing package size information to be reviewed and updated in accordance with the new reporting method. It also requires some system updates, as entirely new fields will be introduced.
This is a significant change, and its impact will require actions from all parties in the industry.
What needs to be done and when?
Suppliers must review the logistics information of all their products and update it in accordance with the new method.
Any changes should be agreed upon in advance and communicated to customers and wholesalers who use the logistics information in their own systems.
Package size 0 will become mandatory product information
Package Size 0 refers to the consumer unit packaging intended to contain the sales unit sold to the end user or consumer at the point of sale. In other words, it is the packaging closest to the product itself.
If the product is unpackaged, enter packaging type Unpackaged (NE) and the dimensions of the unpackaged product in Package size 0. Remember to also enter the dimensions in the Product dimensions section.
If the product is delivered only unpackaged and, on a pallet enter packaging type Unpackaged (NE) and the dimensions of the unpackaged product in Package size 0, and the pallet dimensions in Package size 4 (pallet packaging). Also remember to enter the dimensions of the unpackaged product in the Product dimensions section.
Package Size 0 information must be completed for products as soon as possible, and no later than 1 January 2027, after which it will become mandatory product information.
