Commodity code

A commodity code is a numerical code used to identify products for customs and taxation purposes. The commodity code (also known as a CN code) is a numbering system used in international trade to identify and classify products. In Finland, commodity codes are administered by Finnish Customs, and they are a part of the European Union’s common customs system.

Commodity codes can vary in length. In the LVI-INFO’s product database, either an 8-digit or a 10-digit commodity code is given for each product.

Finding the right commodity code

Commodity codes can be found in the Finnish Customs commodity code service Fintaric. Fintaric is a public service available to everyone without logging in.

In Fintaric you can:
  • search for the correct commodity code by product name or by describing the product
  • see if the product is subject to customs duties, VAT obligations, or restrictions
  • check the required code length (8 or 10 digits) depending on the situation.
