GTIN code
The GTIN code (Global Trade Item Number) is an international identification number that is used to identify products throughout sales and distribution chains. It is most commonly displayed as a barcode on product packaging and enables product identification in retail stores, warehouses, and e-commerce platforms.
GTIN codes are available in different lengths. In the LVI-INFO product database, the GTIN-13 code is used for individual products. GTIN-13 is the most common format in Europe and is sometimes known as the EAN code. Packaging sizes 0–3 use the GTIN-13 format, while pallet packaging (packaging size 4) uses either a GTIN-13 or GTIN-14 code.
Applying for a GTIN code for a product
In Finland, GTIN codes for products are issued by GS1 Finland, which is part of the global GS1 organization. The codes can be obtained by registering as a GS1 customer and acquiring a GS1 company prefix. After registration, the company can generate unique GTIN codes for its products using GS1’s online service.
Reusing of old GTIN codes for different products, is currently prohibited across all industries under existing regulations.
